Title: A History of the World in 6 Glasses
Author: Tom Standage
My Rating: ♥♥
This isn’t really a book I would have chosen to read by myself. I read it for my monthly bookclub, along with The Comic Book Story of Beer, which also didn’t impress me much.
In this book, the author talks about how six beverages helped to influence and change the history of the world. The six beverages were beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca Cola. There were a few interesting tidbits here and there. For example, he mentioned that tea played an important role in the industrial revolution, because the only way they could get workers to keep up with the fast and non-stop machines was if they drank tea. Also, Coke started out as a quack medicine before it became the international symbol of America and freedom in a drink.
Still, I was left feeling like the book took what would have been a fascinating topic and made it dry and textbook-like. I was glad that it was a short, quick and easy read.
